Encouraging Someone to Seek Help
The power of encouragement
A little encouragement can go a long way. Knowing that someone believes in them — and will stand beside them — can make the idea of asking for help feel far less frightening.
Make it easy, not heavy
Offer concrete, low-pressure help: “I can sit with you while you make the call,” “I'll drive,” or “we can look at the website together.” Removing small obstacles matters more than big speeches.
Respect their timing
People move at their own pace. Pushing too hard can have the opposite effect. Keep the door open, keep the invitations gentle, and let them take the step when they are ready — even if that takes a while.
When it is urgent
If you believe someone may be in immediate danger, do not wait — contact local emergency services right away. National crisis lines, such as 988 in the United States, are also available around the clock. (Confirm the number for your region.)
