A guide for families
How Do I Talk to Someone About Treatment?
Choose a calm moment
Conversations about treatment go better when both people are calm and unhurried. Pick a private moment when you are unlikely to be interrupted, and let your loved one know from the start that they are not in trouble.
Speak from care, not accusation
“I have been worried about you” lands very differently from “you have a problem.” Talk about what you have noticed and how you feel, using “I” statements, and leave room for their experience. Listen more than you speak.
You do not need to have all the answers about treatment. It is okay to say: “I don't know what the right step is — but I would like to figure it out together, and I will support you.”
If they say no
People are often not ready the first time. That does not mean your conversation failed — it planted a seed. Keep the door open, stay connected, and consider getting guidance for yourself on what to do next. You can carry hope even when they cannot yet.
