Understanding Relapse
What relapse is, and is not
Relapse is a return to the behavior someone was working to change. It is common in recovery, and it is not a moral failure — it is a sign that something in the plan needs adjusting.
What it can signal
Relapse often points to unmet needs: stress that grew too heavy, support that was not enough, or a plan that did not fit real life. It can be painful and frightening — and it can also be information that leads to a stronger plan.
How to respond
In the moment, the most important things are safety and calm — not lectures. Let your loved one know you are still there. When things have settled, a conversation about what happened and what would help next can become the beginning of the next chapter of recovery.
If you are worried someone is in immediate danger, do not wait — contact local emergency services. You do not have to navigate a crisis alone.
